Most buyers have an interest in the reputation of a community, the schools, or a “section”
of town. even if you do not have children, there is still the consideration for re-sale value. So
these are important questions to wonder about. Unfortunately, REALTORS are not allowed to
®
answer these important questions.
the Fair Housing act of 1968, prohibits real estate professionals and lenders from making any
statements about how good or bad a school or neighborhood is. We can’t even respond
to the standard question about how “safe” a community is. Our definition of safe and what
makes a school “good” may not be the same as yours.
We also cannot tell you what type of people live in a particular neighborhood. We know
that it may be a goal to live in a community that has children or one that does nOt have
children, and yet, we are prevented by law to give you an opinion on that. You will need
to do some of your own homework. Here are a couple of suggestions for you:
• County School Websites— they all have them. Just ask and we will get you connected
to the right one. You can find test scores, graduation rates, specialty center information,
calendars, and so forth.
• www.greatschools.org is a resource for folks who want to know about a particular
school. this site rates all schools on a scale of 1-10. there are also parent reviews.
• Local Police Department—ask for the crime statistics for an area or neighborhood.
they usually only have the information by neighborhood if there is an established
watch program.
• www.spotcrime.com can give you some statistics about crime happening around a
specific address.
• Drive around a neighborhood of interest during the day, school bus drop off times, and
when it is dark. the best knowledge can be seen with your own eyes.
• talk to the neighbors. Show up at the bus stop early and ask some of the parents all
those questions you have about the neighborhood and the schools.
• ask people you trust for their opinions about neighborhoods. Co-workers, parishioners,
family, and friends all have ideas. they also have motives—so be careful who you ask.
they may skew their information to steer you toward or away for their needs more than
yours.
this sounds like a strange law. its intent is to protect people from discrimination and steering.
in order to follow through on those areas of protection, real estate professionals cannot
discuss these topics. Don’t worry. the Pretty team will help you navigate through the
